HAWTHORN has mixed news on the medical front, with Liam Shiels' ankle injury not as severe as first feared, but star small forward Cyril Rioli in doubt for Friday night's clash with the Sydney Swans.

Both Shiels and Rioli rolled their ankles during the win over North Melbourne on Saturday, which secured a top two finish for Hawthorn, and a home qualifying final.

Shiels was subbed from the match, sparking doubts about his chances of playing again this season given he had only just returned from a six-week injury to the same ankle.

However, Hawthorn football manager Chris Fagan said the run-with midfielder was already back jogging, and could even be a surprise selection for the trip to Sydney.

"We were quite concerned when it happened, but we've had some scans yesterday, and he was moving around well and was able to jog," Fagan told hawthornfc.com.au on Tuesday.

"So it's touch and go for this week but we'll see how we go at training tomorrow."

Rioli will also need to prove his fitness before boarding the plane for the round 23 clash.

"There's nothing majorly wrong with him at the moment," Fagan said.

"He rolled his ankle and he's a bit like 'Shielsy' – he'll need to get through training tomorrow to be available for selection."

Vice-captain Jordan Lewis is expected to return after withdrawing from Saturday's match with a corked hip, while Paul Puopolo, who missed with a calf problem, will face a test.
