VETERAN Carlton star Chris Judd needs a good performance against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday to arrest his slide in the Official AFL Player Ratings, brought to you by Vero.

Judd started the season in 11th place on the player ratings table, but he has fallen to 16th after an up and down campaign so far.

The 29-year-old's best performances this year, such as his 27 touches and two goals against Richmond in round one and his 29 touches and a goal against Hawthorn in round 12, have been up to his old standards.

But Judd has had little influence on a handful of other matches, and his effort last weekend, when he gathered just 17 possessions against North Melbourne, led to suggestions that he is a fading force.

Heading into round 18, Judd's player ratings points tally is 529, which is five fewer than the man ahead of him, Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead.

Judd's Carlton teammate Marc Murphy occupies the rung under him on the player ratings table.

Murphy has suffered a slide of his own this season, falling from seventh to 17th.

Things get no easier for the Blues this weekend as they have to take on Gold Coast and its dynamic skipper Gary Ablett.

Ablett was in extraordinary form last weekend, finishing the Suns' win over Collingwood with 49 possessions and two goals.

Yet Ablett's effort didn't see him record the best player ratings score in round 17.

That honour went to West Coast forward Josh Kennedy, who tallied 27.9 points compared to Ablett's 27.

And there is another stat that should calm Carlton's nerves.

On the last four occasions that Ablett has topped 40 possessions in a match, he has averaged 25.5 the following week.
