The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches played in week four of the 2017 JLT Community Series. The following charges were laid:

Charges Laid:

Jy Simpkin, North Melbourne, has been charged with striking Adam Tomlinson, GWS Giants, during the third quarter of the Week Four JLT Community Series match between North Melbourne and the GWS Giants, played at Manuka on Friday March 10, 2017.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the GWS Giants’ Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the body. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction. 

Toby Greene, GWS Giants, has been charged with misconduct towards Sam Wright, North Melbourne, during the fourth quarter of the Week Four JLT Community Series match between the GWS Giants and North Melbourne, played at Manuka on Friday March 10, 2017. 

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea. 

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as a first offence for misconduct. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.

Jeremy Cameron, GWS Giants, has been charged with striking Scott Thompson, North Melbourne, during the fourth quarter of the Week Four JLT Community Series match between the GWS Giants and North Melbourne, played at Manuka on Friday March 10, 2017.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the body. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction. 

Hamish Hartlett, Port Adelaide, has been charged with striking Jarryd Roughead, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the Week Four JLT Community Series match between Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, played at Noarlunga on Sunday March 12, 2017. 

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea. 

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the body. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction. 

Mitch Duncan, Geelong Cats, has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Joe Daniher, Essendon, during the first quarter of the Week Four JLT Community Series match between the Geelong Cats and Essendon, played at Bendigo on Sunday March 12, 2017. 

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea. 

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the head. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.

Other incidents assessed

The match day report against Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt for rough conduct against Collingwood’s Jackson Ramsay was assessed. The panel said Ramsay was running back to take a mark with Riewoldt coming towards the contest. Riewoldt slowed down when he realised he could not take the mark and contact was made to the Collingwood player’s chest. After speaking to the umpire who laid the report, it was the view of the panel the contact was not unreasonable in the circumstances and no further action was taken.

The match day report against Fremantle’s Jon Griffin for tripping Carlton’s Kade Simpson was assessed. The panel said Simpson had the ball and was seeking to evade Griffin’s tackle. As Griffin was falling, he lunged towards his Carlton opponent and his tackle slipped from above the knee, to below the knee. After speaking to the umpire who laid the report, it was the view of the panel that Griffin’s action were not careless or unreasonable and no further action was taken. 

Contact between the Gold Coast Suns’ Steven May and the Western Bulldogs’ Tom Boyd from the third quarter of Thursday’s match was assessed. Boyd was running back with the flight of the ball, attempting to take a mark. May is coming towards the contest with his hands out, in a bid to take a mark also, and keeps his hands out in front of him at all times. It was the view of the panel that the high contact that was made was unavoidable and May did not elect to bump. No further action was taken. 

Contact between North Melbourne’s Shaun Higgins and the GWS Giants’ Steve Johnson from the first quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Higgins was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball when contact was made. No further action was taken.
