COLLINGWOOD'S Ben Reid says he hopes Saturday night's match against the Sydney Swans is the first of many battles against younger brother Sam.

The siblings - 22-year-old Ben is two years older than Sam - played only alongside other each growing up, whether at high school, the Wangaratta Rovers or Murray Under-18s.

The round 14 clash at ANZ Stadium was the first time the pair had been on opposing sides and it was Ben that emerged victorious after Collingwood withstood a strong fightback to claim a six-point win.

Ben said he found out a couple of days out from the game about the prospect of playing on his brother, and he described the occasion a lot of fun.

"We always played on the same team so we were always kicking it to each other and this time we were trying to stop each other from getting a kick," Ben said after the match.

"It was good fun and the best thing is we've got the first one out of the way and things will be good from now on.

"Hopefully we will have a few more duels over the next few years."

The pair lined up against each other for most of the match and the Magpie finished with 16 possessions and eight marks while the younger Reid ended the night with 11 touches and five marks.

Ben said he kept in touch with his brother daily, but the talk often had little to do with football.

However, he did closely follow how Sam was playing.

"With him being the younger brother I definitely watch his progress and watch how he is going and he is really starting to play some really good footy so it is really good thing," Ben said.

On the match, Ben said the team lost a bit of structure during the third and fourth quarters, when the Swans kicked five goals broken only by the three quarter-time break to erase a 30-point Collingwood lead.

"In this day and age if you are not putting the pressure on it is pretty easy to score so we might have dropped off a bit," Ben said.
