MRI scans have confirmed that Hawthorn defender Ben Stratton has ruptured his posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his right knee.

The 22-year-old dislocated his knee cap in the Hawks' rain-sodden victory over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday night.

Stratton attempted to kick the ball off the ground as the Tigers' Jake King and teammate Brent Guerra fought for the ball during the third quarter. However, he did not strike the ball cleanly and he immediately signalled to the bench that he was in trouble as he fell to the ground.

He was stretchered off the ground and immediately taken to the Epworth Hospital.

Scans on Sunday also revealed a strain to his lateral ligament.

"Stratton's anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee is intact and the joint surface looks to be ok," the Hawks announced on Sunday afternoon.

"The club will get specialist views on management over the next day or so and will communicate further information as it becomes available."

Stratton played 20 matches last year and was playing his third game for 2011.
