On his reasons for resigning as Senior Coach:

“There’s no definitive reason, but you’ve just got to assess all the information the best you can and follow your gut – as someone once told me.”

“I found over the last 12 months or so I was asking myself the question of when I would finish, how I would finish and when would be the right time.”

“I guess I sort of found that on Saturday when I asked myself one last time and I thought ‘I’m asking myself too often’ – so it’s time."

“I made the decision Saturday afternoon basically that this would be the last game I would coach. I didn’t communicate it to anyone at that point, but I thought this was a good time.”

“I feel a bit like I’m breaking an addiction really. You know you’ve got to do it, but it doesn’t mean you feel fantastic about it. But in my view, it’s the right thing to do.”

“Our on-field performance had nothing to do with my decision. It’s just time for me to move on for my own psyche and for the rejuvenation of this footy Club.”

“It’s something that has been bubbling around for a lot of months and it only finally got to the stage where the campaign was about to finish and I had to decide whether I wanted to embark on another campaign or not.”

On his future plans:

“Queensland is home. You never know where your life might take you but, from my point of view – Queensland’s home.

“I haven’t resigned to do anything else, that’s why it’s a bit scary. When you finish what you’re currently doing without knowing what you’re going to do next is a bit scary. But I’ve never been a person who can open a second door until I’ve closed the first one.”

“I’ll probably retire from coaching and become a media expert.”

On the timing of his departure:

“If there were other clubs looking for coaches, I might’ve forced the decision a bit earlier but there wasn’t a need for a decision earlier than the end of our campaign.”

“I always thought I wanted to go a year early and not a year late. On that basis, this seemed like the best time to stop.”

“It’s more to do with the fact that I’ve been here ten years and not so much about what has happened in the last two or three years.”

“People keep questioning the long-serving coach and unfortunately players read that too and it becomes a bad cycle – I wanted to avoid that.”

“From my point of view, if I coach for another year or two – so what? Eventually I’m going to finish and it becomes clear that there is no right time.”
