FORWARD Aaron Edwards' three-month exile from senior selection will end when North Melbourne's match committee selects its side to play Richmond on Saturday night.

Edwards was suspended by North's leadership group for speeding and then refusing an alcohol test on his way to training on January 26.

The 25-year-old was ruled out of the club's pre-season campaign and the first four home and away rounds but has played at VFL level in recent weeks.

Veteran Adam Simpson expects Edwards to push strongly for an immediate recall and says his teammate has done everything right in his time out of the side.

"He's been really good for such a long spell out," Simpson said. "You'd think you could waver a bit but I haven't seen anything like that.

"The thing about Aaron is he's been playing. It's not a form issue and he's been playing pretty good footy so it's just going to come down to whether there's a spot there for him."

North's attack has missed Edwards' strong marking and constant leading in its start to the season, however, debutant Ben Warren was good in a hit-up role against Essendon last week.

Simpson believes Warren, who had 13 possessions and seven marks, should hold his spot but sees that Edwards' inclusion can offer more again.

"We've covered it (Edwards' absence) but he's pretty unique with his hands and his work rate in that area," Simpson said.

"Especially early [in the year] when our forward 50 entries were a bit sloppy we missed him. He's an important part of our footy club."

Edwards has the strength rather than the size needed to play in a key position and across 18 games in 2007 troubled opposition defenders more with his work outside the forward 50.

His further development was stalled by a broken leg in round six last year, encouraging David Hale to settle at full-forward. And Drew Petrie will be used at centre half-forward this season.

"You still rely on your big power forwards and you've got the (Cyril) Rioli, Lindsay Thomas, Matty Campbell, (Stephen) Milne-type small forwards," Simpson said.

"But then you've got your hit-up forwards as well, who are just as important if not more because often they're your way in."

Simpson added that Edwards was aware of the opportunities that awaited him and deserved to take them.

"He's obviously done the wrong thing," he said. "We all make mistakes.

"Just like myself and Daniel (Pratt) and a lot of other players, the only way you can prove yourself is how you go about it going forward.

"I'd like to see him play.”
