MELBOURNE will be looking for a new major sponsor in 2014 after Opel Australia announced it had closed the Australian arm of its business on Friday.

The deal with Melbourne was due to end at the finish of 2013 but it's still a blow to the Demons, who were recently forced to ask the AFL for financial support as they rebuild the club.

Opel's decision to close its operations did not come as a surprise to Melbourne.

It has been aware of the difficulties the organisation had experienced in turning a profit in Australia and knew it would be seeking a new major sponsor for next year.

Melbourne also emphasised that the loss of sponsor was due to the organisation's decision to leave the Australian market rather than any difficulties with the sponsorship.

However it is unfortunate timing for Melbourne as it struggles to attract a new coach and retain key players.

Melbourne had to end its relationship with Energy Watch earlier this year after its owner made racist remarks on Facebook.

It is in the process of re-invigorating the board and is sorting through nominations.

The AFL is finalising its package of financial support and has made it clear it will approve new board members and the club's next president.

Experienced businessman Peter Jackson was appointed earlier in the year as CEO to see the club through the troubled period.

"Opel have been a great partner of our club and we are disappointed to see them go," Jackson told melbournefc.com.au.

"It does present the club with an opportunity moving forward to partner with another brand and further optimise our commercial partnerships."

"Whilst Opel have made the public announcement today, the club was aware of this potential outcome a number of weeks ago and has been able to start planning accordingly."
