For the first time in history, the 2011 Toyota AFL Finals Series will be powered with 100 per cent Origin GreenPower.

This means Origin will have 100 per cent of the electricity consumption of each finals game matched into the grid with electricity from GreenPower accredited renewable sources.

Origin’s GreenPower contribution will lessen the greenhouse gas emissions normally produced during the AFL finals by more than 790 tonnes.

AFL General Manager Commercial Operations Darren Birch said the AFL is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and welcomed the commitment by Origin to provide GreenPower during the finals.

“By having 100 per cent Origin GreenPower provided for every game in the finals, we can make a really positive difference to our impact on the environment and significantly reduce our carbon footprint.  The initiative also provides the opportunity to raise awareness and encourage football supporters to think about the environment,” said Mr Birch.

Phil Craig, Retail General Manager, Origin said that powering all AFL Finals with 100 per cent GreenPower was a simple and effective way for Origin to help the AFL reduce the environmental impact of energy use during one of Australia’s most high-powered sporting series.

“Last year we were able to reduce the carbon footprint of the AFL Finals Series by nearly 270 tonnes by providing 100 percent green energy for the AFL Grand Final and 25 per cent for the other eight AFL Finals Series matches.  This year, by powering all finals with 100 percent GreenPower, we will increase that figure to 790 tonnes.  It’s a simple and easy example of how we can make a difference.”

Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge has joined Origin as the official GreenPower Ambassador for the 2011 Toyota AFL Finals Series.

“I’m really excited to be supporting this initiative.  Having nine massive finals powered by 100 per cent Origin GreenPower will have a really positive influence in educating players and supporters about how they can make a positive difference to their impact on the environment,” he said.

To help spread the GreenPower word during 2011 Toyota AFL Grand Final Week Origin Energy will set up an interactive footy site at Federation Square.  Football fans can meet their favourite players, have autographs signed, photographs taken and will also have the opportunity to harness their own power on special power bikes.
