ALWAYS on the lookout for ways to expand the game's boundaries, Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy has called on the AFL to allow the Giants to open their 2013 premiership campaign with a match in China.

Sheedy told the Sunday Herald Sun that Greater Wesrern Sydney was best-placed to become the first club to play a home and away game overseas.

"In more than 150 years of playing the game, no one has put their hands up to play a game for premiership points overseas, and I don't want anyone to beat us to it," Sheedy said.

"A lot of clubs wouldn't be interested, but we are saying that we want to do it. I have spoken to our chairman about it as it is in our best interests to be first.

"I haven't spoken to anyone at the AFL yet, but they know it is something that I want to do.

"We could even [open the 2013 season] with a game, and I think it would work really well.

"I couldn't see why Melbourne wouldn't be interested in a match over there as they have already worked on building some relationships in China."

Giants chairman Tony Shepherd has thrown his support behind Sheedy's plan.

"Obviously, it's a decision for the AFL," Shepherd said.

"But if we just look at it in a global perspective, China is our largest trading partner and the biggest country in the world, and we have the best game in the world.

"So how good would it be to play a four-point game in China, and what does that do for the AFL as a global game?

"We have to think big. You can only be what you aspire to be. If you think small, you will be small, and if you think big, you will be big."
