GEELONG’S 99-point demolition of the West Coast Eagles at Skilled Stadium on Saturday has seen them join Essendon as the only two clubs to have a 21-1 win/loss record at the end of the home-and-away season.

The Cats 24.20 (164) defeated West Coast 10.5 (65) to finish the season on top of the ladder with 84 points, giving the club its second McClelland Trophy in a row. Geelong has now won 40 of its past 42 matches, including its last 13 in a row – its fourth greatest winning streak.

After scores were level at quarter-time – both teams kicked 4.3 – Geelong blew the match away with eight goals to two in the second quarter. And from the final three terms, the Cats piled on 20 majors to six.

So dominant were the Cats, they amassed a whopping 451 disposals to 215 – each Geelong player recording at least 12 possessions, while they also sent the ball inside 50 on 66 occasions to 28.

It was the second time this season Geelong belted West Coast, having crushed the blue and gold at home in round 13 by 135 points. It meant the Cats achieved two 100-point-plus victories this season and two wins by 99 points.

The only blemish for Geelong was the report of small forward Mathew Stokes, who had his number taken in the third quarter for striking West Coast midfielder Chad Fletcher in the head.

Reigning Norm Smith Medallist Steve Johnson was outstanding with six goals, ruckman Brad Ottens continued his dangerous form surge towards September and Harry Taylor shone in defence.

In the midfield, Brownlow Medal contenders Jimmy Bartel (28 disposals) and Gary Ablett (30 touches) were outstanding. But with so many standouts for the Cats, it will be fascinating to see if they poll votes on Brownlow night – making the count even more intriguing.

Cameron Ling (a game-high 34 disposals), Joel Selwood (29) and Joel Corey (20) also starred, while Tom Lonergan booted four goals.

For West Coast, captain Darren Glass, ruckman Dean Cox, key forward Quinten Lynch and midfielder Matt Priddis all battled hard on a trying day.

With Geelong entering the match as massive favourites (TAB Sportsbet was offering $1.01 for a win), the odds were firmly against West Coast ($12). And when Johnson kicked truly just 29 seconds into the match, the signs were ominous.

But when Ashley Hansen opened West Coast's account at the 11-minute mark, the visitors followed through with three in three minutes, grabbing a 10-point lead mid-way during the team.

However, when Johnson became the day's first multiple goalkicker in time-on, the scores were level at quarter-time.

It was goal-for-goal early in the second term – West Coast trailed by just two points at the 12-minute mark – but any thought of an upset was soon thwarted, when Geelong slammed home six goals in 15 minutes.

This resulted in a 42-point lead to the Cats at half-time.

Then it became party time.

Geelong booted six goals to three in the third term and when Johnson booted his fifth, the Cats were up by 61 points – the same margin at three quarter-time.

In the final term, West Coast managed just one goal as Geelong piled on a further six majors, capping off a brilliant home-and-away season for the Cats.
