WEST Coast will begin the process of finding a new coach this week as a sub-committee is formed to find a replacement for John Worsfold.

The 2006 premiership coach resigned last Thursday after 12 seasons at the helm.

AFL.com.au understands that Eagles midfield coach Scott Burns and Hawthorn assistant Adam Simpson are highly rated by the West Coast hierarchy and are likely to be interviewed.

Eagles chairman Alan Cransberg revealed on Friday that the board is set to appoint a sub-committee this week to begin the process of finding a new senior coach.

The sub-committee will include Cransberg, deputy chairman James McMahon, and chief executive Trevor Nisbett as well as a couple of others.

The board is confident they will be in a position to appoint a senior coach by mid-October.

Speculation also surrounds Peter Sumich as a possible candidate. The Eagles' all-time leading goalkicker spent 11 years as an assistant at West Coast before he defected to Fremantle in October 2011 to work under Ross Lyon.

Both Sumich and Simpson are still heavily involved in finals campaigns that could well last until the end of September.

Burns has spent five seasons as a senior assistant at West Coast and resisted overtures from his former club Collingwood to fill a role as an assistant when Nathan Buckley took over for the 2012 season.
