SYDNEY Swans midfielder Daniel Hannebery has taken little consolation from his best on ground performance in a narrow loss to Hawthorn at the MCG.

A massive post-game rap from coach Paul Roos and a strong possibility of Brownlow votes did little to assuage the young midfielder's anguish, after he collected 25 possessions, nine marks and three goals in the Swans 10.19 (79) to 11.11 (77) defeat.

“It’s pretty shattering, there are so many different moments that could have changed the result,” Hannebery said.

“You look at all the individual things you could have done better and things you did wrong. We fought back, but at the end of the day we just couldn’t get over the line.

“It’s a pretty shattering feeling at the moment.”

Hannebery played down his influence on the game by describing his contribution as simply playing his role.

“Attitude, effort and work rate were the three principles. If we get that sort of thing right, we give ourselves a really good shot, so it was pretty disappointing not to come away with a win,” he said.

“We knew Hawthorn were going to come out and play that unsociable footy and hunt and tackle and be aggressive, but we were really confident we could come out and match them and beat them.

"I thought our pressure was good, there were a couple of times we could have made the pressure better, but it’s just disappointing.”

The Swans beat the Hawks in tackles 88 to 77 and clearly dominated the hit-outs, courtesy of ruck pair Shane Mumford and Mike Pyke.

Despite the Swans’ air supremacy, the Hawks won the clearance count 38 to 32, a point Hannebery said the team would review.

“We’ll have to review it and really look at ourselves as a midfield group and try and assess what we can do better," Hannebery said.

“Mummy and Pykey gave us first use and were sensational but we just need to work a bit harder and try to stop the opposition influence from the clearances, which really cost us in the end.”
