As courageous Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery said after Saturday night’s one-point loss to Essendon, the effort of co-captain Adam Goodes over four quarters kept the team in the game.

The impact of the dual Brownlow medalists’ 29-possession, three goal performance should not be overshadowed, even though his shot for goal after the siren will probably be the everlasting memory out of the game.

There was no greater example of the electrifying effectiveness of Goodes than his second goal of the match that has been adjudged the round 20 SwansTV Play of the Day.

Trent Dennis-Lane had just kicked a goal to get the Swans back within a point of the Bombers with five minutes remaining in the second quarter. The resulting centre bounce saw Goodes attack a loose ball at a frenetic pace after it had bounced past the oncoming Jude Bolton and Dyson Heppell.

Goodes opted to toe-poke the ball into the free space between he and the forward 50 rather than pick the ball up and risk being wrapped up in a tackle by the Bombers’ pursuing pair of Ben Howlett and Angus Monfries.

The ball eventually sat up nicely for Goodes to run onto, accelerate, and kick a remarkable goal at full pace from 45 metres out.

Goodes’ goal and Lewis Jetta’s first quarter snap have both been nominated for the AFL Goal of the Year. You can vote for your favourite Swan here.
