Graham Huggins made an enormous contribution to the development of St Kilda Football Club. A lifelong St Kilda fan, he joined the committee in 1953. The following year he was chairman of the recruitment committee and set about rebuilding the club which was at rock bottom in all areas. He travelled thousands of kilometres scouring the land for young footballers and with Alec Peak and coach Alan Killigrew, recast the playing list. Eventually the fruits of their labours blossomed and St Kilda reached the 1961 finals after a 22 year absence. Huggins had taken over the presidency in 1959 after a volatile election – one of many in St Kilda’s history. He brought stability and calm to the position which had always been lacking in the club’s make-up. He presided over the greatest period in St Kilda’s history and had a reign of two decades before stepping aside in 1979 to make way for new leader Lindsay Fox. He continued on St Kilda’s board in a handover role before lending assistance to the Swans in their move to Sydney.
