Australia’s leading sports – the Australian Football League, Cricket Australia and Netball Australia – have joined with Medibank Private, to create Medibank Private 1Seven, a program to improve the health and wellbeing of Australia’s children.

Medibank Private 1Seven is based on a Federal Government recommendation that children should participate in at least one hour of physical activity and eat seven serves of fruit and vegetables (two fruit and five vegetables) every day.

The message is simple: Move More, Eat Well.

Childhood obesity continues to be one of the biggest health challenges in Australia and children’s weight and physical activity have been the subject of much recent discussion and media attention.

Research indicates that the number of children who are overweight or obese has jumped dramatically in the past few decades, with almost one in four children considered at risk.

The short and long-term consequences of physical inactivity and poor diet in children could lead to severe health problems, including the development of Type 2 diabetes during childhood, low self-esteem and heightened risk of preventable diseases in adulthood.

The time to act is now!

The Medibank Private 1Seven message will be delivered in schools, classrooms, homes and communities using web-based material, curriculum resources, games, giveaways and school visits from ambassadors and athletes from the three participating organisations.

Schools are vital in communicating the health message. They are the perfect setting to educate and inform children on health and wellbeing issues, enhance health literacy and competency and channel information to families and the broader community.

We look forward to your involvement in the Medibank Private 1Seven program.
