GEELONG midfielder James Kelly says he'd relish the chance to captain Australia in the International Rules Series against Ireland, set to kick off on Friday night.

Australian coach Rodney Eade said on Sunday that Kelly was in contention for the role, along with Melbourne skipper Brad Green, fellow Demon James Frawley and North Melbourne's Andrew Swallow.

"[The captaincy would] be amazing, but it's a bit of a hypothetical at the moment," Kelly said from the squad's training camp in Torquay on Monday.

"It's up to 'Rocket' [Eade] and the coaches.

"If it happens it'd be great, but we'll just wait and see."

An announcement on the captaincy will be made on Tuesday at the end of the camp.

Kelly is one of 16 members of the 23-man Australian squad who has never played the hybrid game at any level.

The 27-year-old admitted he was on a steep learning curve when it came to using the round ball.

He has called on Cats teammate David Wojcinski and Frawley - who both took part in last year's victorious series in Ireland - for advice, and found Sunday's first training session at the Whitten Oval challenging.

"I struggled [with my skills] early, I was a bit all over the shop," Kelly said.

"But towards the end of the session I picked it up not too bad.

"It'll be a bit different once we're under a bit of pressure though."

Kelly has only recently returned from an end-of-season trip to Hong Kong with a group of his premiership-winning Geelong teammates.

He said he now faces a balancing act between making sure his fitness is at a high enough level to compete against the Irish, while at the same time getting some much-needed rest during his short AFL off-season window.

"You're walking that fine line between having a rest and doing enough so that you're right to play," Kelly said.

"You've got to remember that you're still on holidays but you want to take the next couple of weeks pretty seriously, so it's a fine line."
