JAMES Hird's one-year ban for his part in the Essendon supplements scandal won't stop him from attending this year's Brownlow Medal count.

As a former winner of the game's most prestigious individual honour, the banned Bombers coach automatically receives an invitation.

Both the League and Essendon have confirmed Hird had been invited, but it remains unclear whether he and his wife Tania will attend the AFL's night of nights after the most tumultuous year of his career.

Hird was suspended in August for 12 months after the ASADA inquiry into the Bombers' 2011 and 2012 supplements program, during which time he is not permitted to work for the football club in any capacity.

The two-time Bombers premiership player shared the Brownlow with Michael Voss in 1996.

He played 253 games in the black and red between 1992 and 2007 and has so far coached 66 games.

The Brownlow Medal ceremony will be held at Melbourne's Crown Palladium ballroom next Monday night.
