AFL BOSS Andrew Demetriou says the 2014 season will "no doubt" start earlier than it did this year.

The AFL Commission is busy finalising next year's schedule – including the length of the pre-season competition – but Demetriou left no doubt regarding the League's plans.

"I've got no doubt we're going to start the season earlier. No doubt about it, whatsoever," Demetriou told ABC Radio on Saturday.

The chief also suggested the NAB Cup may be shortened to possibly just pre-season games.

Demetriou also revealed the panel charged with puttingforward a recommendation to the AFL Commission on whether to approve Melbourne's bid for a priority pick has been reconvened.

The priority pick panel was formed last month after Melbourne under new CEO Peter Jackson requested a priority pick in this year's draft as part of a package to turn around the embattled club's fortunes on and off the field.

In addition to Evans, the panel includes the League's head of game development Andrew Dillon, national talent manager Kevin Sheehan and total player payments manager Ken Wood.

"Mark (Evans) has reconvened the list group to look at issues around (the) draft, priority pick etcetera, etcetera, and we haven't got a priority pick now unless it's at the discretion of the Commission," Demetriou told Triple M on Saturday.

Demetriou also said the AFL was reviewing its entire player payments scheme with the League to conduct a scheduled review with the AFL Players' Association soon.

"In relation to the cap, obviously we've already announced that we're reviewing the cost of living allowance," he said.

"I'm sure that Mark will have some views once he gets right into the gist of his job of the whole total player payments.

"We'll be going through our mid-term review with the Players' Association shortly about player payments."

Demetriou said the AFL's equalisation trip to New York next week would be an important fact-finding exercise as the AFL and clubs seek answers to the growing revenue gap between the rich and poor clubs.

The AFL CEO said his view was that there should not be an equal salary cap across the competition, arguing that American competitions such as the NFL had additional allowances on top of their salary caps such as franchise players and luxury taxes.

The AFL will update club presidents and CEOs in September on its equalisation plans.

"We are determined to try and get equalisation right," Demetriou said.

"The whole issue of salary cap and draft is an integral part of the equalisation debate.

"It's not just about distributing revenue because there's no point equalising all the revenues when you've got disparity in the draft or in the salary cap."

Demetriou, who leaves for New York on a fact-finding mission in regard to equalisation on Monday, covered a range of topics on a number of different radio stations on Saturday.

Here is a summary of what he had to say:

Essendon drugs issue:
Held firm on the "not providing a running commentary" line.

"This whole issue is about trying to get to the bottom of whether Essendon players were injected with substances that were legal and that were safe." Triple M

"
I feel for James listening to his comments last night, I feel for the Essendon players, I feel for all of the people involved in this situation. I feel for the parents of the players, I feel ASADA. They wouldn’t do this for five months, go through the interviews, they are under immense scrutiny to deliver answers. You can understand the anxiety, you can understand the pressure. There’s nothing pleasant about it." AFL Live

Will the Bombers be stripped of premiership points?
"I don't want to comment on that. I don't know what's in the report and whatever is in the report helps determine what the next phase is and that's why it's important that we get the facts so that people know the full story." Triple M

Report linking him to leaking sensitive/confidential information (Demetriou has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Australian Crime Commission)
"I would never brief (anyone) on something that I know to be confidential, that might breach the AFL commission." 3AW

On possibly considering taking legal action over the reports
"That matter will have to go through the relevant legal hands, because you get to the point where enough is enough." Triple M

"We did have the actual briefing from the Australian Crime Commission (ACC), but we had no knowledge of the club being investigated. So it was impossible to be able to tell someone about a club being investigated when we didn't know." Triple M

The Date of the ASADA investigation
"I don't know whether the report is finished yet." 3AW

Will it be August 5?
"Don't know when the date is. I don't know how anyone's predicting the date, because I don't even know if the report's finished.

"And if the report is, I'm sure there are issues around getting it legalled by ASADA, and so forth.

"I don't even know when the date is and the speculation is probably like the election speculation." 3AW

On the Match Review panel
"There's some (decisions) that make you scratch your head. They're not without fault and they don't get it right all the time and I scratch my head sometimes. What you want, in perfection, is consistency. We've got a job to try to address the issue of consistency and to address how those things are communicated.

"Often it's lost in the communication and we haven't been very good at that." Triple M

The makeup of Melbourne's board:

"We haven't identified a chairman, yet. We are endeavouring to and we're speaking to some very good people who are trying to help." Triple M

"Alan Stockdale has indicated that he would like to be on the board and that he would like to be chairman and we are going through that process at the moment." Triple M

When will the Round 23 schedule be determined?
"On Monday, we hope. It's being discussed on Monday at the AFL executive meeting and there's a couple of scenarios (to go through).

"We'll hopefully announce something on Monday or Tuesday." 3AW

Demetriou also confirmed ANZ Stadium is available on Friday night, despite reports there had been a scheduling clash with NRL.

The Sydney Swans host Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium, in the yet to be determined round 23 fixture.

The prospect of two byes next year
"Hopefully we can learn (from this year) and if we do go down that track we can stagger some much better games on Friday night, Saturday night and in some key slots." 3AW

On Greater Western Sydney
"If follow the same trajectory we think they will, they’ll look like the Gold Coast, they’ll win a few games next year. It’s going to be a 10-20 year project. We’ve never believed it was going to be a quick fix. While some people might be viewing GWS, as ‘oh gosh’ they’ve got to be doing better quicker. We’re not panicking, we’ve got great faith in what this club will do." AFL Live

Gary Ablett senior or junior?
"He’s (junior) like a blue chip stock, he’s got better. He does it with ease. If you wanted reliability sustained over a long period of time, you sort of go Gary junior. I’d like both to be honest." AFL Live
