THE AFL Commission has vowed to support the Melbourne Football Club in the wake of president Don McLardy's resignation.

However AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has said "any support provided by the AFL will be highly conditional".

Demetriou said the AFL Commission wanted Melbourne to be a strong, vibrant club and return to a level of performance that the supporters and members deserved.

"In principle, the AFL Commission will support the club in its reconstruction and we will use the next few weeks to work through the issues identified by the club including the level of financial support required to turn around its fortunes," Demetriou said.

Melbourne CEO Peter Jackson outlined to the AFL Commission on Friday morning what the club hoped to do in order to reconstruct the club.

Jackson said he received a fair hearing and expected the Commission to make a decision within the next fortnight.

He said the package requested involved a combination of picks and finances.

At the same meeting club president McLardy informed the AFL Commission he intended to resign.

Demetriou acknowledged McLardy's contribution, particularly his effort in taking over the club after the passing of his close friend, Jim Stynes.
