HAWTHORN is seeking AFL approval to unfurl its premiership flag twice, with a decision not expected for up to two weeks.

The Hawks will unfurl the flag at their first MCG home game of 2014, the Grand Final re-match against Fremantle in round three.

But they have also asked for permission to conduct an initial unfurling in round one, before taking on the Brisbane Lions in Launceston.

Hawthorn CEO Stuart Fox said holding two separate unfurlings would allow both the club's Melbourne- and Tasmanian-based fans to celebrate the occasion.

"We haven't got approval to do this yet, but we're certainly investigating the possibility of unfurling the flag twice," Fox told hawthornfc.com.au.

"So the main unfurling would be round three against Fremantle – that'll be an exciting opportunity – but we're looking at treating Tasmanian members and supporters as well."

Holding two separate unfurlings would be a break from convention, and an AFL spokesperson said the request would need to be approved by the League's executive, which could take some time.

Any flag unfurling must be attended by AFL commissioners, meaning there are logistical issues to be considered.
