WESTERN Bulldogs skipper Matthew Boyd will miss the opening round of the season after scans on Monday revealed he had suffered a calf strain.

Boyd experienced calf soreness following the practice match against Richmond nine days ago and after failing to improve last week he underwent a scan that revealed the extent of the injury.

Body is not expected to return until at least round 3, with the Bulldogs indicating he was expected to miss at least two or three weeks.

The club was taking a positive approach.

Hrovat's big dreams

"Although it’s unfortunate that Matthew has suffered an injury on the eve of the season, it will provide some of our talented, emerging midfielders an opportunity to take another step in their development," General Manager of Football, James Fantasia said.

"Matthew, as always will rehabilitate his injury with the professionalism that we’ve come to know and expect. And we have no doubt he’ll be back as quickly as possible."

It is a blow to the Bulldogs with Adam Cooney in doubt for round 1 after suffered a setback with his knee last week.

Boyd has won the club's past two best and fairests and has not missed a game for the past two seasons.

He played 107 consecutive games between 2005-2010.

The Bulldogs play NAB Cup premiers, the Brisbane Lions, at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
