RICHMOND has met with former Western Bulldogs assistant coach Brett Montgomery as it searches for up to five replacements for Damien Hardwick's support team.

Montgomery, who left the Whitten Oval last month after his contract was not renewed, is also on a shortlist of candidates the Brisbane Lions are compiling for their senior vacancy before interviews start.

The Tigers have held recent talks with Montgomery, but AFL.com.au understands the 43-year-old will still be an applicant for the Lions' position.

Assistant coach Blake Caracella, who will leave Geelong at the end this season, has also met with the Tigers, whose new football manager Neil Balme will start on Monday.

Richmond chose not to renew the contracts of Ross Smith, Greg Mellor and premiership coach Mark Williams last month and is yet to confirm what role Mark P Williams will have at the club in 2017.

Midfield stoppages coach Brendon Lade was offered a one-year contract but could yet move to Port Adelaide, where he will be interviewed.

The Lions finalised their coaching selection panel on Wednesday and have been compiling a shortlist of candidates.

The selection committee is made up of club great Simon Black and list manager and former Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab.

Consultant and psychologist Matti Clements, who was a member of the panel that selected St Kilda coach Alan Richardson, is also on the panel, which will be led by CEO Greg Swann.

Adelaide's highly rated football manager David Noble is now understood to be a certain appointment in the important general manager of football role and will round out the panel.

Hawthorn's general manager of football Chris Fagan has been heavily linked to the senior coaching role, and it is understood approaching North Melbourne senior coach Brad Scott has been discussed internally.

The Lions have also added assistant coaches John Barker (Carlton) and Jade Rawlings (Melbourne), who are completing the AFL's Level Four program, to their shortlist.

Sydney Swans assistant coach Stuart Dew confirmed on Thursday that he would not be an applicant and is committed to seeing out his contract until the end of 2018.
