GEELONG is looking to trade young midfielder Brent Prismall for draft picks rather than players.

A report in Wednesday's Herald Sun had linked the Cats with out-of-favour midfielder Andrew Lovett but Geelong will not be chasing him because of a lack of salary cap space.

Speaking on day three of trade week, Geelong general manager football operations Neil Balme said it was unlikely Prismall would be wearing the blue and white hoops next year.

“Prismall’s keen to go to Essendon,” he said. “We haven’t given up completely but it is looking very unlikely (that he will stay). We haven’t got the money to bring anyone in and we will be looking for draft picks.”

The 22-year-old has had a hard time cracking in to the all-conquering Geelong side but looked to have consolidated a spot before seriously injuring his knee in the first final against St Kilda.

Balme said apart from Prismall’s likely departure, Geelong would have a quiet week at the trade table.

“It was always going to be a quiet week for us. We don’t have much scope for bringing anyone in even if we wanted to because of the TPP (Total Player Payments). We’re not keen for too many to go,” he said.

Balme said the club had been in discussions with Essendon about a trade for Prismall but that negotiations were “pretty much up in the air.”
