Why can cats jump from fences and trees without hurting themselves? Part of the answer is in their bones.

So why do cats have such tough bones?

Well, cats like milk and fish, spend lots of time outside in the sunshine and get plenty of exercise jumping from trees, fences and so on.

Milk and other dairy foods contain 'calcium' which helps make bones and teeth strong. Sunlight helps our bodies make Vitamin D, which we need to get the most out of the calcium. And exercise, particularly running and jumping, also makes bones stronger.

You can get calcium from milk, cheese, yoghurt and fish such as sardines, salmon and shellfish. If you don’t get enough calcium, your bones get weaker and may be more likely to break if you fall over.

So if you want strong bones, think of cats. But don’t try jumping from trees.
