THIS season will not be fondly remembered by most at Port Adelaide but the club has received a rare bit of good news with Chad Wingard earning a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination.

Wingard got the nod for his 27-possession performance against the Brisbane Lions last Saturday.

The Power played possibly their best game of the season, leading at three-quarter-time before a comeback by the Lions reclaimed the lead.

Wingard said while the result was disappointing, the Power could gain plenty from the way it played out.

"We played out three quarters where we were really on. The fourth quarter we let ourselves down a little bit but we'll learn from that and we'll get better," Wingard told AFL.com.au.

"We've just got to keep pushing and keep learning from our mistakes so hopefully we can put four quarters together this week at the MCG (against Richmond)."

Wingard has played all but two games in his debut season, with a shoulder injury forcing him out of the round six and seven games.

He has become the first Port Adelaide player to earn a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination since Jasper Pittard in round four last season.

The 18-year-old said his game has come along in leaps and bounds since the start of the season.

"I think I've improved as a person and as a footballer. The coaches and the group have been great," he said.

"They've really put their time into me and helped me work on what I've needed to work on, things like the spread from stoppages and just mentally as well. All the credit goes to them."

Wingard was a highly rated junior footballer and had been long tipped to be a top 10 pick at last year's NAB AFL Draft.

With Greater Western Sydney holding 11 of the first 14 picks, the odds were that Wingard would have to travel east to start his AFL career but the planets aligned and Port Adelaide nabbed him with the sixth overall pick.

"I'm extremely lucky, I knew that night when I was drafted by Port Adelaide how lucky I was when I met up with the coaches," he said.

"Just the steps they are taking to the future look really good. I'm looking forward to everything this club has to offer and hopefully I'm here for a while."

Wingard's work ethic and exceptional skill have made him an instant hit with the Port Adelaide faithful. Last month his sublime skills were on display on a video shown on the Power's club website where he successfully kicked footballs into rubbish bins and into basketball hoops.

He is adamant the impressive footage was not digitally altered.

"That was shot on a day off about five weeks ago. There's no trickery.

"That was all done within an hour probably. I suppose I've had to work on it but it's one of those things you have to do when you've got some down time," he said.

"You do it before a game and try to kick the ball into the bin, just to build a bit of confidence. It's a bit of fun as well, nothing too serious."
