SYDNEY Swans defender Rhyce Shaw says it won't be a surprise if coach Paul Roos swings the axe at the selection table on Thursday night after successive heavy losses to Geelong and the Western Bulldogs.

He said the team had put in two poor performances and players had to take responsibility.

"If guys get dropped, it wouldn't be a surprise because you can't accept those two losses and the way we've gone about it,” Shaw said before training on Tuesday.

"I'm sure the younger guys will be pushing for their spots this week and we've got a number of guys that really deserve a game and have been kept out of the side because we've been in such good form."

Shaw said the players' poor mental attitude was as much to blame for the two losses as their personnel woes.

Daniel Bradshaw, Mark Seaby, Shane Mumford, Ben McGlynn, Jarred Moore and Craig Bolton all missed the 38-point loss to the Bulldogs, but Shaw wasn't using their absence as an excuse.

"It probably does have a little bit of an effect with guys who are missing but ... we've shown that we've had a few guys out here and there and we've still played well.

"I don't think we can use that as an excuse because we've had guys like Pykey and Jesse White who have gone into those positions and done quite well.

"It's just the fact that our pressure and our contested footy around the stoppages is not up to standard. That's where we've got to make up the difference, not necessarily in the personnel on the field."

Shaw said the most disappointing aspect of the two defeats was the missed opportunity to make a statement against two clubs expected to challenge for the premiership.

However, he said the Swans' leadership group was intent on making a statement against one of 2010's biggest improvers, Fremantle, at the SCG on Saturday.

"I watched the Collingwood-Freo game on the weekend and [Fremantle was] pressuring and pressuring as much as they could," Shaw said.

"They fell a bit short but they tried to stick to what they know and that's what we've got to do - not try to get away from things that we're good at, and that's pressure and contested footy.

"It's up to us leaders to show the way. We can't keep putting in performances like that because the younger guys and the players who aren't in that group really look up to us.

"We've got to make sure that we stand up each week and make sure we give our best performance, and hopefully the other guys will follow."
