Hawks too strong

Jason Phelan  May 3, 2008 4:45 PM

HAWTHORN, powerful at the stoppages and in attack, remains unbeaten after comfortably accounting for Collingwood by 65 points at the MCG on Saturday.

The Hawks led at every change before putting on a 10-goal final term to record their seventh win of the season - 24.10 (154) to 13.11 (89) - in front of 76,048 fans.

Sam Mitchell was outstanding for Hawthorn and led from the front with a game-high 39 possessions including 11 clearances with Brad Sewell (26 disposals), Shane Crawford (25) and Jordan Lewis (24) providing excellent support.

Jarryd Roughead (six goals), Lance Franklin (six, all kicked in the second half) and Mark Williams (five) combined to terrorise the Collingwood defenders, while Trent Croad kept Travis Cloke goalless at the other end.

Heath Shaw battled hard for the Pies with his 34 touches coming mostly in the back half, but the next highest possession-winner only had 22, while Tarkyn Lockyer, who played up forward most of the day, booted four goals.

Luke Hodge was close to best on ground in the first half, but the vice-captain left the match just two minutes into the second after he pulled up sharply clutching his right hamstring.

Marty Clarke booted the first goal of the match, but it didn’t take long for the Hawks to assert themselves on the contest. Franklin was playing slightly further up the field than usual which occasionally left Roughead as the only tall forward option and he did well with the extra space.

He had one goal in the first quarter, but it could easily have been three as Hawthorn surged toward the quarter-time break. Cyril Rioli continued his stellar form and he would have delighted his coach with a tackle on Scott Pendlebury that earned him a set shot from close range that he duly converted.

Mitchell was instrumental with 11 possessions as the Hawks put on four unanswered goals to open up a 22-point gap at the first change.

Hodge continued to impress in the second term with his second goal extending the lead, but the Magpies steadied with Heath Shaw mopping up well in defence.

Williams crumbed a spilled ball beautifully to add his second major and Roughead converted from a free kick, but Shane O’Bree booted the last goal of the half - his side’s fifth – to make it a 21-point margin at half-time.

Hawthorn looked set to break the game open with the first two goals of the second half going to key targets Roughead and Franklin, but the Magpies refused to go away.

Down by 39 points 10 minutes in, Collingwood managed consecutive goals for the first time in the match only to see Franklin’s third closely followed by a nice set shot from Williams.

Still the Pies didn’t buckle with Lockyer booting his third followed by Ben Johnson as they gave themselves a fighting chance entering the last quarter 25 points in arrears.

Simon Taylor did well to continue after he copped a high knock from Clarke that left him wobbly on his feet in the third, but it was his ruck colleague Robert Campbell who scored the opening goal to make things tough for the Magpies.

Collingwood didn’t get a sniff after that as Roughead, Williams and Franklin went about boosting their goal tallies at the Punt Road end to the delight of the brown and gold faithful.

Both sides made late changes with Chance Bateman out for the Hawks and replaced by Stuart Dew with Magpie Ryan Cook coming in for forward Anthony Rocca.
