Jamie Cripps celebrates a goal against Gold Coast on Saturday night

WEST Coast flogged an insipid Gold Coast by 92 points on a miserable and wet night at Domain Stadium to remain in second spot on the AFL ladder.

It rained relentlessly for periods and the hapless Suns conceded a flood of goals as the Eagles cruised to victory, winning 21.9 (135) to 6.7 (43) in front of 26,964 brave fans.

West Coast kicked 12 straight goals in the third term, the highest score of any quarter in the club's history. The Suns narrowly avoided the lowest score in their history after the Eagles put the cue in the rack in the last quarter.

Eade feels sorry for inexperienced defenders

"I felt sorry for some our defenders," Suns coach Rodney Eade said post-match.

"The third quarter was like an air-raid shelter.

"There was just a gulf in experience and a gulf in talent. They were, in age and games played, they were well ahead of us. You could just see they were cleaner with the ball."

Matt Priddis brought his own football, gathering 39 disposals and kicking two goals. Elliot Yeo had a career-high 29 touches and four goals.

Shannon Hurn was impassable across half-back with 25 touches and 12 marks. Chris Masten had 43 disposals, 20 of them in the last quarter. Josh Kennedy kicked four goals before he was wrapped in cotton wool and subbed out in the third term. Mark LeCras and Josh Hill also kicked three goals each.

Kennedy red vest just a precaution: Simpson

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said he was pleased that his side backed-up so well from the win over Port Adelaide last week.

"I was concerned this week that we might have a bit of a let down from last week," Simpson said post-match.

"But I was really proud of the players and how they handled the week and the game.

"We haven't performed too well in the wet in the past, and we made a bit of a focus of it, without going too hard at it. To keep them quite low on inside 50s and have impact on the scoreboard ourselves . . . I was pretty happy with how we played."

The Suns had few winners. Dion Prestia had 27 touches and kicked a goal late while Harley Bennell gathered 23 disposals and kicked 1.2 before sitting out the last quarter with a sore left knee. Touk Miller and Tom Nicholls tried hard.

Both sides made late changes pre-game. Jeremy McGovern did not recover from his corked calf from last week and was replaced by Jackson Nelson while Gold Coast lost Tom Lynch (calf) and Luke Russell (illness) pre-match with Mitch Hallahan and Greg Broughton coming in.

Player focus: Bennell proves he cares

West Coast dominated the opening term with 23 inside 50s to four. The Eagles locked the ball in their forward half for most of the term using the wet conditions to their advantage. The Suns won the clearances 12-7 but the Eagles structured so well behind the stoppages that any quick kick-out was marked and redirected. Hurn had five inside 50s and set up two scores from intercept marks.

Kennedy kicked 1.2 for the term but his goal was a wonderful snap from a set shot in the pocket to set up a 14-point quarter-time lead.

The Eagles stepped it up a gear in the second term with Yeo and Priddis leading the charge. Priddis had 10 touches for the term and took three intercept marks as the Suns kicked it to him repeatedly coming out of defence. Yeo positioned himself inside 50 and took three marks 30m from goal, one bravely going back with the flight, and kicked three goals for the quarter.

The Suns managed just one point for the term. They turned the football over 21 times by foot for the half and trailed by 40 points at half-time as a result.

The third term was a rout. The Eagles kicked 12 goals straight for the first time in their history to lead by 102 points at three-quarter time. The Eagles kicked 10 goals out of their first 11 inside 50s of the quarter and the Suns raised the white flag.

Kennedy and LeCras kicked three goals each for the term and Hill kicked two. Kennedy threw his arms up in frustration at the coach's box when he was subbed as a potential bag was nipped in the bud in the name of preservation.

The Eagles switched off in the last quarter while Brad Sheppard came off after an opponent fell across his left knee but Simpson said post-match he was fine. Gold Coast kicked four goals to two to avoid some unwanted records.

West Coast travel to Etihad Stadium next Saturday to face St Kilda, while Gold Coast heads home to host Collingwood.
