EAST Perth footballer Beau Chatley has taken an encouraging step in his recovery from a serious neck and spinal injury by walking from his hospital ward to spend Christmas with his family.

The 21-year-old underwent emergency surgery in July when he reportedly had no feeling below his neck after his jumper was pulled over his head and he was tackled into the ground in a WAFL reserves match.

Since then, Chatley has undergone intensive rehabilitation and has regained enough strength and coordination to walk small distances, while he has also regained limited mobility in his arms.

In a statement, East Perth said the former WA under-18s squad member had walked from his ward on Thursday in "an emotional moment for Beau, his family and the staff at Fiona Stanley (Hospital)".

"Beau is hopeful that he will continue to improve his range of motion in his hands, as well as increasing his coordination to walk longer distances," the statement continued.

"Beau’s recovery so far has been a triumph of perseverance and determination, however Beau and his family understand there is still a long road ahead.

"In recent weeks Beau, has been leaving the hospital on weekends into a rented unit in Perth. This unit will now become his permanent residency in between regular physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions.

"Beau, the Chatley family and the East Perth Football Club would like to thank everyone for their support since the incident occurred in July. The donations and kind words have been overwhelming and very much appreciated."

Chatley was playing his 84th game for the Royals, including three League matches, when he suffered the injury to his neck and spinal cord.
