JARRYD Roughead will front a media conference on Tuesday morning to talk about the next steps in his fight against cancer.

Roughead will be joined by the Hawks' club doctor, Michael Makdissi, and football manager Chris Fagan from 9.30am AEST. AFL.com.au will stream the media conference live.

The champion Hawk was diagnosed with a reoccurrence of melanoma earlier this month, having had surgery in June last year to remove a cancerous lesion on his lip.

He has not spoken publicly since a routine body scan on May 16 showed the disease had returned.

However, he joined his teammates in the rooms during their round nine loss to the Sydney Swans and travelled to Brisbane to help celebrate close mate Jordan Lewis' 250th game on Saturday.

Lewis spoke two weeks ago of his shock and sadness at finding out about Roughead's latest illness.

"It's very serious, it's extremely serious. Any form of cancer is serious. It's going to be a bit of a tough road for him but we're there for him," an emotional Lewis told Fox Footy on May 17.

"When he first got the scare with his lip it was probably a little bit unknown and he probably didn't know how to react, but certainly the news he got yesterday has shaken him up.

"Probably in his head he thought he was over it, because he had a scan six months ago and nothing showed up. But obviously the scan this time showed differently."

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said after the win over the Lions that the club was seeking to keep life "as normal as possible" for both Roughead and his teammates as the forward began treatment.

"That'll unfold over the next few weeks in terms of the treatment he needs to get but he's got great support from his mates," Clarkson said.

"I don't think any one of our players are playing for Roughy as much as they are playing for what the team needs right at that point in time.

"Obviously, you have a lot of empathy for what he is going through but we'll get ourselves ready for Melbourne next week and look forward to that contest."
