Dom Brew will lead the Smithy's VFL State Team against the SANFL.

Werribee star Dom Brew has been appointed captain of the Smithy’s VFL State Team and will lead the "Big V" against the SANFL in Adelaide on Saturday, April 6 during AFL Gather Round.

The 27-year-old midfielder is one of the most highly respected players in the Smithy’s VFL, having developed a reputation as one of the league’s fiercest competitors across 91 senior appearances for the Tigers since 2017.

Brew’s appointment as captain of the Smithy’s VFL State Team follows a career-best season in 2023, where he claimed Werribee’s best and fairest and was named rover in the Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year. His efforts helped guide the Tigers to their first grand final appearance since 2005.

He will head a three-player leadership group, with Southport Sharks co-captain Jacob Dawson and Box Hill Hawks midfielder Callum Brown to serve as vice-captains.

Brew said it was an honour to be appointed captain of the Smithy’s VFL State Team for the league’s first representative game since 2017.

“I’ve been in the league a while now so I’m incredibly humbled,” Brew said.

“It’s pretty surreal considering my journey coming from the Development League and then working my way through.

“Coming down from Albury to Werribee to play in the Development League and then debut midway through that year and hold my spot at such a great club like Werribee. Then to stay in the VFL all the way through Covid and to be here now is huge.

“For me to represent not just the VFL, but also the Werribee Football Club is something that I am proud to do.”

The fierce rivalry between the VFL and SANFL will reignite on Saturday, April 6 when the best players from both competitions face off at Glenelg’s Stratarama Stadium during AFL Gather Round… A Festival of Footy.

It will be the first representative clash between the two competitions since 2016, reigniting a rivalry dating back to the late 1800s.

The Smithy’s VFL State Team squad of 50 was announced last week, featuring many of the best VFL-listed players from across the competition. AFL-listed players, including rookie-listed players, are not eligible to be selected.

A final squad of 23 players to represent the ‘Big V’ in the league’s first representative appearance in seven years will be announced next week.

Box Hill Hawks coach Zane Littlejohn will coach the Smithy’s VFL State Team, with Steve Daniel (Southport Sharks), Ben Hudson (Brisbane Lions) and Adam Skrobalak (Port Melbourne) to serve as assistants.

Entry to the match is just $15 for Adults and $10 for Concession, all under 18s receive free admission and do not require a ticket for entry.
