The Smithy’s VFL State Team has been announced for Saturday’s highly-anticipated clash against the SANFL in the 2024 AAMI State Game.

The 23-player team features many of the best VFL-listed players from across the Smithy’s VFL. AFL-listed players, including rookie-listed players, were not eligible to be selected.

2023 runner-up Werribee has been recognised for its outstanding past 12 months. The Tigers, who have recorded consecutive away wins to start the 2024 season, have seven representatives named in the Smithy’s VFL State Team, including reigning club champion Dom Brew who has been selected as captain.

Southport has five players selected, including midfield duo Boyd Woodcock and Jacob Dawson who last year finished runner-up in the J.J. Liston Trophy and Coaches MVP Award respectively.

Dawson and Box Hill Hawks utility Callum Brown will serve as vice-captains.

The Smithy’s VFL State Team features a strong mix of established VFL stars and players who have returned to the Smithy’s VFL from AFL clubs.

The team features five players who were on AFL lists in 2023. They include Trent Bianco (Footscray Bulldogs), Tom Highmore (Port Melbourne), Ned Long (Collingwood), Roarke Smith (Port Melbourne) and Lachie Young (Carlton).

Box Hill Hawks coach Zane Littlejohn will coach the Smithy’s VFL State Team, with Steve Daniel (Southport), Ben Hudson (Brisbane Lions) and Adam Skrobalak (Port Melbourne) to serve as assistants.
