NOT even a handicap could stop Tom Scully maintaining his dominance as Greater Western Sydney's best runner, with the midfielder winning the club's final race of 2017.

Scully won the Alan McConnell Cup on Friday, an annual 3.5km handicap race held at the Giants' final training session of the year since 2014, and named in honour of the club's first employee, plus current director of coaching and AFLW coach.

The 26-year-old is rarely beaten when the stopwatch comes out over pre-season, and his elite running ability was too much again for his teammates, despite Scully giving the first runners just under a two-minute head start in warm conditions.

Scully ran down draftee Nick Shipley late in the race around Bicentennial Park at Sydney Olympic Park to take out the trophy, with former Collingwood big man and off-season signing Lachlan Keeffe third.

Last year's winner Tim Taranto had to give the cup back to the original winner Scully, with the race a tough end to the pre-season after an intense footy session on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, draftee Brent Daniels will have a delayed start to 2018 after undergoing knee surgery.

The 18-year-old is expected to be sidelined for up to three months due to an injury to his meniscus.

In some good news for the Giants, star forward Toby Greene (toe) is out of his moon boot and should begin running in January, while veteran Ryan Griffen looked sharp on the track after his ankle issues this year.
