GEELONG coach Chris Scott says he still believes ruckman Trent West can be a key player in the club's finals campaign.

After an extended spell in the VFL, West was called back into the Cats' AFL side after Dawson Simpson suffered a season-ending knee injury against St Kilda in round 18.

But the 2011 premiership player struggled to make an impact during the loss to North Melbourne on Friday night.

West finished with only seven possessions and 14 hit-outs, and he was well beaten by Roos big man Todd Goldstein.

"Westy's shown that he can do it in the past," Scott said on Tuesday morning.

"It was his first game back on the weekend. It would be extremely harsh to judge him on a performance first game back into the AFL team against a virtual All Australian quality ruckman in Goldstein.

"We have got confidence in him, but not only him, Mark Blicavs and Nathan Vardy as well.

"We're confident we're got some options there."

The Cats' midfield is set to be strengthened for Saturday's game against this season's rags to riches tale, Port Adelaide, with Allen Christensen expected to be recalled.

Christensen was sidelined for a month by hamstring soreness, then returned via the VFL last weekend.

"We're pretty confident that he'll be selected in our 22 this week," Scott said.

Paul Chapman also made his long-awaited comeback from hamstring problems in the VFL last weekend.

"It wasn't a huge workload for Chappy, given the work he's done on the track, so it's first small step," Scott said.

"He's got a little way to go, but it was overwhelmingly positive, his performance on the weekend."

Chapman will run around in the VFL again this weekend. He will then be considered for Geelong's trip to Perth to play West Coast in round 21.

"To be honest, the Perth trip doesn't worry us too much, with regards to Chappy's back," Scott said.

"We put a lot of work into the preparation of our players. It's done on an individual basis.

"I don't think sitting on a plane for three hours is going to be a huge hurdle for Chappy to overcome.

"That's not to say we're going to play him in Perth. We've still got some decisions to make in the meantime."

The Cats' last loss against Port Adelaide was at Simonds Stadium way back in round 21, 2007.

But such has been the Power's resurgence this season, Scott and his men will not be taking them lightly.

"They're in the eight for a reason," Scott stated. "They've got some real strength and depth through their midfield."
