ST KILDA president Greg Westaway has reiterated the Saints' stance on the  "very challenging circumstances" surrounding Stephen Milne and says Milne's indefinite suspension was in the veteran's best interests.

Milne was charged with four counts of rape on Tuesday that stem from a 2004 incident.

It is understood Milne is at the MCG, visiting the St Kilda changerooms before Saturday's clash with Melbourne.

He was stood down on Wednesday for an "indefinite period" while being allowed to remain a listed player.

Westaway, who delivered the club's statement regarding Milne's suspension, said the Saints supported their 268-game forward under the "presumption of innocence".

He also said the players agreed with how the club was dealing with the situation.

"This week has been a very difficult one for all concerned and has centred around what is without doubt a highly sensitive and serious matter without precedence," Westaway said, ahead of the game.

"The club is firmly of the view that a person is innocent until proven guilty and given this presumption of innocence, there was no question of standing Stephen Milne down.

"However, we were concerned about the sensitivity surrounding everyone affected by this matter as well as the welfare of Stephen and his family.

"Therefore, we felt a period of absence was in the best interests of all concerned and both Stephen and his teammates are supportive of the club's position at this very difficult time.

"We all hope to see Stephen back playing soon."

Meanwhile, defender Sam Fisher is out of Saturday's game, replaced by Brodie Murdoch.

Fisher missed round 11 with a foot injury he has been reported to have carried for much of the season.
