DANIEL Wells is expected to return to the field this weekend in a massive boost for North Melbourne, but the star midfielder is a strong chance to return via the VFL.

Wells was injured when teammate Drew Petrie accidentally trod on his right foot at training ahead of North's round five clash with Collingwood.

The midfielder played in that game, but pulled up sore afterwards and has not played since.

Wells' foot injury was originally thought to involve no more than bone bruising, but was later diagnosed as a Lisfranc injury (when one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus).

Wells still has to complete North's training sessions on Wednesday and Friday without any mishaps to play this weekend.

AFL.com.au understands North has yet to decide whether Wells will be eased back via the VFL or come straight back into the Roos' team, possibly in the substitute's green vest.
