Queensland music composer and keen Brisbane Lions supporter Christopher Elves has scooped the competition at the Daytime Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles earlier this week.

Chris of Ormiston in Redland City won the Emmy in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for his soundtrack in the animated children's show Animalia based on the famous book by Graeme Base.

"It’s the most bizarre thing to happen to you," said the elated composer from Los Angeles.

"It’s usually only the Americans that win."

Before leaving for the awards, Chris said the project had drawn on his past as a classically trained pianist.

"It was like a fully orchestrated film score - each half hour episode felt like a movie."

Chris competed for the title of Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition against four other daytime programs: The Oprah Winfrey Show, Sesame Street, The Backyardigans and The Wonder Pets.

A keen Brisbane Lions supporter, Chris said he was hoping to return to Australia in time for the big Gabba Elimination Final showdown between his Club and Carlton this Saturday night.

The annual daytime Emmy awards are one of three sets of Emmy Awards run by NATAS along with awards for sport and news television. There is also a separate Prime Time Emmy Awards.
