MATTHEW Egan has been appointed as coach of Essendon's VFL side and head of player development for the 2016 season.

Egan's appointment comes as part of a reshuffle among Essendon coaching ranks under new coach John Worsfold.

Egan stood in as the Bombers' senior coach for the final three rounds of the 2015 season following the resignation of James Hird.

However, he didn't apply for the full-time position.

Egan takes over the VFL side from Mark Neeld.

Neeld, the former Melbourne coach, has assumed a newly created role as game performance manager, while Hayden Skipworth has been appointed as a line coach under Worsfold for 2016.

Egan, 32, said he was ready to take on the new role.

"Coaching the AFL team for the final few rounds of 2015 gave me an appetite to want to coach my own team," Egan said.

"To coach the VFL team and work alongside John Worsfold is something I'm really looking forward to, and I have to thank the club for providing me with this fantastic opportunity to further my coaching career.

"Player development has always been a passion of mine, it's an extremely rewarding job and I'm fortunate to be supported by a group of talented and passionate development coaches."

The Bombers made two list changes on Thursday, with young midfielders Nick O'Brien and Will Hams being delisted.
