ADELAIDE'S inaugural AFL Women's premiership coach Bec Goddard has returned to Canberra and won't coach the Crows next year.

Goddard became an instant sensation with her quirky quotes, and her reputation as a sharp-minded coach climbed by the week as Adelaide surged to the competition's first flag in 2017.

The Crows failed to make the Grand Final this past season after a slow start hindered by injuries to key personnel, including Erin Phillips.

Goddard had juggled her Adelaide commitments with her role with the Australian Federal Police until now.

The 39-year-old will focus on her law enforcement work this year while doing some coaching with NEAFL men's side Canberra Demons.

"I feel very privileged to have coached Adelaide’s AFLW team for the past two seasons," Goddard said.

"It has been an honour to work with this playing group and I'll always be proud of what we achieved and grateful to the Adelaide Football Club for the opportunity.

"I'm really looking forward to coaching men's football with the Canberra Demons in the NEAFL in the coming months, and I'm hopeful that one day I will have the opportunity to work in football full-time."

Crows chief executive Andrew Fagan praised Goddard for her "instrumental" role in developing the club's AFLW program and delivering the historic premiership.

"In a perfect world, we would love to have seen Bec continue in her coaching role, but equally understand the decision she has made," Fagan said.

"We will always be grateful for her work both on and off the field in establishing such a strong platform for us to continue to grow the women's game, and we wish her all the best for her future endeavours."

The search for Goddard's replacement will begin soon.
