THE AFL will reconsider the schedule of its Ballarat games next year, after Sunday's clash at Mars Stadium finished in dark conditions that made it difficult to see parts of the ground.

Makeshift lighting was used during Port Adelaide's victory over the Western Bulldogs, with both coaches calling for earlier start times for future Ballarat matches.

The first bounce was scheduled for 3.20pm on Sunday, and a wet and windy afternoon meant the match finished in fading light at around 6.00pm.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley said after the match that he "couldn't see the game in the last quarter", while Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said he would prefer the club hosted its future Ballarat fixtures in the first half of the season.

The Dogs' five-year agreement to host games in Ballarat started last year, but 2018 marked the first time the club played two fixtures at the ground in a single campaign.

The Bulldogs hosted the Suns at Mars Stadium in May in a fixture at 1.45pm on a Saturday, which appears a more suitable time for future matches at the ground.

Speaking on Monday, the AFL's general manager of clubs and broadcasting Travis Auld confirmed that the League would look to schedule future Ballarat games earlier in the year.

"We had a pretty cold and wet day in Ballarat yesterday," Auld told AFL.com.au.

"One of the challenges is that this is the first time we've had two games in Ballarat across the course of the season. We do need to think about when that second game is played.

"The early game was quite good, so a game later in the season and later in the day – we'll probably try to avoid that next year."
