JOSH Schache will make his return from injury in the VFL on Saturday and will spend time forming chemistry with fellow high-profile key forward Tom Boyd.

Schache has missed the past two weeks with a grade one calf strain, but coach Luke Beveridge said the former Lion was fit again and would join premierships stars Boyd and Jordan Roughead in the Footscray side to play Coburg at Whitten Oval on Saturday.

With Schache and Boyd both struggling with the rigors of game over the past 12 months and yet to play a senior match this season, how the young key forwards combine will be of great interest to the football world.

Schache was selected by Brisbane with pick No.2 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft, while Boyd was the first player chosen from the 2013 talent pool.

"Schache will play at VFL level tomorrow," Beveridge said on Friday.

"(Footscray will) be quite tall with Tom Campbell, Tommy Boyd, Jordan Roughead and Schache, so we've got to manage that in the right way to make sure they get the exposure that they need.

"It will be a combination of those four, more than just (Schache and Boyd up forward)."

Roughead missed last week's win over Essendon with a concussion he suffered in the round two loss to West Coast, and Beveridge said the 27-year-old needed some continuity at state league level after sustaining a hip injury in the JLT Community Series.

"Roughy over the last month and a half had an (injury) interrupted run at it, so we just need to get him going again, get some consistency across four quarters and bring him back into the team when he feels on top of his game," Beveridge said.

Fellow big man Jackson Trengove was close to returning from a cracked shoulder blade for Saturday's clash with Sydney at Etihad Stadium, but Beveridge said the 27-year-old could resume against Fremantle in round five.

In other injury news, premiership forward Clay Smith has undergone surgery on the right knee he's had reconstructed three times.

The 24-year-old, who is yet to play at any level this season, has been suffering from swelling and club is yet give a timeframe on his return to training.
