LEGENDARY sports broadcaster Drew Morphett has died aged 69.

Morphett called VFL/AFL games for both the ABC and Channel Seven for more than 30 years and hosted the much-loved highlights program, The Winners.

The highly respected play-by-play commentator, who was born in Sydney, made his name calling football after starting with the ABC in 1966 as a sports cadet.

Following a time in Perth, he returned to the ABC in 1977 and started a 28-year stint calling matches.

He also covered cricket, basketball and golf among other sports.

Morphett spent time at Channel Seven, between 1988 and 2000, after they won the football broadcast rights.

He received an Order of Australia Medal in 2014 for his contribution to broadcasting.

Morphett was found by his wife Karen on Friday night at their home in Pakenham, Victoria, News Corp reported.

Long-time colleague Robert Walls paid tribute to Morphett on Fox Sports.

"Like everybody I’m shocked and stunned and saddened because it was only a week ago that I was at a Carlton lunch and Drew was there," Walls said.

"He looked in good spirits.

"He was very supportive, loved his sport and loved mixing with sporting people.

"It’s far too young to see him go. This is the time where the cream should have been on the top of the cake and he should have been enjoying life because he’d already done the hard yards."
