CLAYTON Oliver doesn't need to change his behaviour on social media in the wake of a Twitter spat with former Test cricketer Damien Martyn, Melbourne leadership group member Max Gawn says.

Their back-and-forth was sparked by vision of an incident against West Coast when Oliver fell to the ground after a glancing blow to his jaw from West Coast defender Will Schofield.

Martyn replied to Channel Seven's tweet with vision of the incident, saying "Am I watching soccer?", a reference to Oliver apparently diving.

Oliver hit back, suggesting Martyn "worry about" his infamous shot against South Africa in 1994 that saw Australia lose a tight Test match.

Oliver has also changed his profile picture to an image of Schofield's elbow connecting with Oliver's chin.

The previous week, Tom Bugg asked Western Bulldogs Norm Smith medallist Jason Johannisen if he was "ready" on Instagram a couple of hours before the teams met. He was spoken to by the leadership group in the wake of the Demons' big win over the Dogs.

However, Gawn didn't see much cause for concern about Oliver's banter with the former cricket star.

"It was a bit surprising – I wasn't expecting Damien Martyn to pop up on my Twitter feed," Gawn said.

"Social media's their (the player's) own choice.

"We did speak to Buggy about it just a little bit but Buggy's not going to change too much of what he's doing and I'm sure Clayton won't either.

"I think Clayton probably regrets sending the tweet out because of the amount of tweets he got back to him, but it's all a bit of fun.

"The clip that he sent was before he was born, which was quite interesting, so obviously (teammate) Colin Garland has given him a few cricket tips there. Maybe just (don't) sledge for a couple of weeks."
