NAB AFL Rising Star contender Sam Powell-Pepper will be rested for Port Adelaide's clash with Collingwood on Sunday.

The tough 19-year-old midfielder has played every game this season for the Power, but will have the weekend off to freshen up for the run into the finals.

"We probably think it's an opportunity for him to have a bit of a spell in his first season, which has been amazing," Power coach Ken Hinkley told reporters on Friday.

"We'll take that opportunity this week and we'll give him a little rest.

"Speaking to him during the week, he said, 'I don't really need a rest, but I'll have it'.

"He'll be back next week."

Powell-Pepper is one of five changes to the Power's side in the wake of last weekend's embarrassing 84-point loss to Adelaide.

Jackson Trengove, Angus Monfries and Aaron Young have been omitted, while key defender Jack Hombsch is out with a hip injury.

"The hip is part of it, (but) it's not the only part why Jack isn't in the side," Hinkley said of Hombsch.

"He's certainly struggling to be at his absolute best physically."

The Power are also trying to figure out how to best utilise restricted free agent Trengove, who has moved to the forward line this year after starting his career in defence.

"'Jacko's' just a little bit off and he knows that," Hinkley said.

Into the side comes star Chad Wingard, defender Dan Houston, swingman Dougal Howard and midfielders Brendon Ah Chee and Matt White.

Wingard has missed the past two weeks with an ankle injury, and will provide a massive boost to a midfield that was smashed against the Crows.

Howard, 21, returns for his first senior game since the 199cm utility tore his ACL in the round 13 loss to Fremantle last year.

"He's got some real power that we like, he's got some speed at the top end and he's a good size and marks and kicks the ball really well. He can play both ends and he can play in the ruck," Hinkley said.

The Power (11-8) are fifth on the ladder and desperate to respond after a record loss in the Showdown.

"It's a definite jolt, that's for sure," Hinkley said.

"For people to say anything other than that, it's not right, it knocks you around.

"Collingwood are in pretty good nick, so if we're not up for the battle we'll be in trouble again."
