WEST Coast is happy to keep winning ugly but the Eagles aren't satisfied with the way they're playing, midfielder Luke Shuey says.

The Eagles withstood a stirring last-quarter comeback from Carlton on Sunday to win by seven points and remain in the race for the top four.

They have now won four in a row and have matches to come against Melbourne, Collingwood and Fremantle over the next three weeks.

Shuey said finals were won with ugly football at times, but he conceded the Eagles were a long way short of their best football.

"I suppose yesterday was probably an ugly game to watch," Shuey said.

"But that was due to the pressure (the Blues) brought. We tried to handball through it a lot of the time and their pressure was too good for us.

"But finals footy is like that. You've got to win ugly in finals. Not too many games in finals you win by a big margin.

"Hawthorn smashed us in on Grand Final day but I can't remember too many finals where there's been massive wins. They're generally ugly and pretty contested, dirty sort of games.

"The most disappointing part was we had our chances to ice the game yesterday and we didn't take them."

There was little reaction from the Eagles players yesterday after the final siren. Shuey said the players were simply frustrated at leaving the door open for the Blues.

"It didn't feel like a loss," Shuey said.

"We let them in with a sniff probably a bit too easily. But that's not taking anything away from Carlton. They played really well in that last quarter and certainly outplayed us."

Coach Adam Simpson admitted post-match that the Eagles were not in the elite bracket of teams in the competition at the moment and they had a lot of work to do to reach that level.

Shuey said West Coast's best form wasn't that far away but the players needed to work exceptionally hard.

"It's not an easy fix," he said.

"We've got to keep working hard, keep being honest with each other, and hopefully things click into gear. But I don't think we're too far off.

"We're still reasonably happy with where we're at. We're still in a good position to finish the home and away season well and hopefully set ourselves up for the finals."

The Eagles face the Demons at Domain Stadium on Saturday. Star ruckman Nic Naitanui won't be available this week but he is back in full training and is still on track to return in the next two or three weeks.
