The moment(s): Leon Davis provided a couple of highlights in what was, despite the packed house, a somewhat lacklustre affair. His two superb snaps could both be contenders for goal of the week, with his first-term effort likely to vie for goal of the year status. Not only did he send the Magpie crowd into raptures, he helped his side put the Blues away early.

2. Geelong 15.9 (99) d Hawthorn 14.14 (98) at the MCG

The moment: Joel Corey set up Saturday's stunning finale when he roved a boundary throw-in. Evading oncoming traffic, he punted goalwards and fortuitously found Jimmy Bartel’s open arms deep in the right pocket at the Punt Road end. The pressure on the Brownlow Medallist was immense, but he coolly stepped up and finished the job, sparking wild scenes of jubilation.

3. Fremantle 10.11 (71) d West Coast 8.18 (66) at Subiaco

The moment: Gutsy Fremantle youngster Tim Ruffles is staring at a season-ending knee injury, but a hospital kick from Brett Peake may have ruled him out even earlier. Ruffles, 18, was a sitting duck running inside 50 with the flight, but Darren Glass made a last-minute decision not to lay him out. Ruffles went on to kick two crucial goals, perhaps leaving the Eagles skipper with some regrets.

4. Brisbane Lions 17.14 (116) d North Melbourne 11.9 (75) at the Gabba

The moment: With six goals to his name, a career tally of 399, and his side cruising to victory, Jonathan Brown was the only thing on 25,000 minds at the Gabba. Could the big fella get his 400th? A pin-point pass from Josh Drummond found Brown's chest, he strode in from 50 metres and duly slotted number seven of eight for the night.

5. St Kilda 16.10 (106) d Western Bulldogs 9.7 (61)

The moment: There was nowhere for Scott Welsh to hide after he neglected to read coach Rodney Eade's whiteboard at three-quarter-time. Unaware he was supposed to be on the pine, Welsh took to the field as the 19th man. Despite the efforts of the Dogs' interchange staff to quickly bench someone, the emergency umpire noticed and the Saints were gifted a goal.

6. Sydney Swans 10.8 (68) d Melbourne 6.14 (50) at Manuka Oval

The moment: With his more-experienced teammates sending set shots wide all around him, Liam Jurrah showed them how it’s done. The gifted forward made the most of a high Cale Morton kick inside 50 when he effortlessly outreached 200cm giant Mike Pyke. He thrilled the crowd by gloving the ball one-handed, then displayed the composure necessary to split the middle with copybook goalkicking technique.

7. Richmond 15.11 (101) d Essendon 14.12 (96) at the MCG

The moment: After mounting a three-goal charge, the Bombers were within five points with less than a minute remaining. Richmond fans held their breath as the ball was roosted into Essendon's attacking half. Under the ball was one of the smallest men on the field – Shane Edwards. The 180cm midfielder marked, cleared and saved the Tigers the match.

8. Adelaide 19.18 (132) d Port Adelaide 9.8 (62) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: Crow Brett Burton looked decidedly rusty in his first game for 12 months last week after a knee reconstruction, but it didn't take long for the 'Birdman' to take flight. With his side needing a goal after a shaky start, Burton soared over Power defender Paul Stewart. Even better – he kicked truly once he eventually returned to earth.
