Goodes in "no doubt" for round one

AAP  February 5, 2013 3:00 PM

AFL 2012 Toyota Grand Final - Hawthorn v Sydney

Adam Goodes says he is a sure thing to be ready for round one of the 2013 AFL season

SWANS co-captain Adam Goodes says there is "no doubt" he'll be ready for the start of the AFL season despite being restricted over summer due to a knee injury.

Goodes suffered a partial posterior cruciate ligament tear in the Swans' Grand Final win last year, making rehabilitation the chief focus of his 16th AFL pre-season.

But the 319-game veteran rejoined the club's main group during a four-day training camp in Coffs Harbour last week and says his knee is feeling great.

"I think the best thing that has happened out of all of it is that I'd gone through the same process with my other knee," Goodes said on the club's website.

"We've taken a really cautious approach this time because we did have that extra time and now I feel like I'm really coming good at the right time of the year.

"There is no doubt I'll be ready for round one."

Dual Brownlow medallist Goodes won't feature in the Swans' pre-season opener against Greater Western Sydney and Carlton on February 24 in Blacktown.

But the 33-year-old expects to get some match fitness under his belt before the Swans start their premiership defence on March 30 with a derby fixture against GWS.

"I'll try and fit in a couple of NAB Cup games before round one and make sure I'm really feeling good and get some confidence going," he said.

In positive signs for the Swans, Goodes rated fellow co-captain Jarrad McVeigh and Adelaide recruit Kurt Tippett the standouts at the Coffs Harbour camp.

"Just from looking at them up here in Coffs and watching the boys train, Macca seems to be running around quite well on top of the ground and it's been nice to see Kurt Tippett take some marks up forward," he said.

The AFL suspended Tippett until round 12 for his role in the Crows' salary cap breaches and draft tampering.

Injured defenders Nick Smith (knee) and Marty Mattner (hip) are expected to follow Goodes' lead and rejoin the main training group soon.

The Swans were given a break until Friday after the camp in Coffs Harbour, while Goodes will link up with the Indigenous All Stars in Alice Springs.

Goodes will be an assistant coach in Friday night's exhibition match against Richmond, helping out former teammate, good friend and the man whose club games record he broke, Michael O'Loughlin.
