WEST Coast defender Will Schofield says it's ridiculous for people to question the commitment of players who grow beards.

Former North Melbourne and Adelaide forward Wayne Carey sparked the debate about facial hair when he slammed Melbourne defenders James Frawley, Jack Watts, Colin Garland and Tom Gillies for their beard-growing competition.

The Demons have lost all three of their games this season by a combined 321 points, and Carey said Demons players should be more focused on their form rather than silly competitions.

But Schofield, who shaved his own year-long beard for charity on Wednesday, said Melbourne's horror displays had nothing to do with beards.

"I'm not really sure how facial hair affects anyone," Schofield said.

"It's actually a joke that people think that having a beard means you are going to run less.

"It's actually ridiculous the amount of attention it got in terms of form or how teams are playing.

"It's like if people have long hair – it's got nothing to do with footy."

Schofield raised around $10,000 for the WA Cancer Council by shaving his beard.

The 24-year-old said he'd been called everything from Ned Kelly to Tom Hanks in Cast Away due to the rangy growth.

Schofield played some of the best football of his 81-game career while donning the growth, but said it might be a while before he grows it again.
