FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon believes his side is gathering some real momentum as they head into the second half of the year following the Dockers 40-point win over the Brisbane Lions.

The Dockers are on a seven-match unbeaten run, the second longest winning streak in their history, and Lyon believes his side is in a strong position giving the quality of personnel still to return.

"The fire is roaring a little bit isn’t it, and we’re up and about in a real sense and there is some quality on the horizon to return," Lyon said in the post-match.

"It was a challenge coming off the bye, but giving Brisbane some credit, their intensity and tackling was quite strong.

"But in the end we worked through it. I don’t think anyone walks away satisfied, but we bank four points and at the legitimate half way mark, I think we will take where we sit," he said.

Lyon spoke mid-week about improving his team's scoring power and he is pleased with the way the forward line is operating in the absence of Matthew Pavlich, Michael Walters, and Aaron Sandilands.

"Look, we’re making do. I think it’s not perfect but Walters and Pavlich and Sandilands can all play a part in that.

"But we’re pretty comfortable in the fact that we can find a way without them.

"We don’t want to be slaves to anybody.

"It’s not always going to be champagne football but sometimes you just have to get it done."

Fremantle started sluggishly against the struggling Lions, leaving the coach frustrated with his side's first half performance.

"Just our ball use, we knew we were going to have to use it."

"They have been a flood back team, to protect their defence, so we knew we were going to have to use it a fair bit and we were going to have a lot of disposals and a lot of kicks.

"But I would have preferred our chemistry and our efficiency was of a higher level.

"So we made some adjustments at three-quarter time. To the players credit we got a hold of the clearances and scored more effectively," he said.

Although Lyon was excited about his team's position he was quick to point out the challenges that lie ahead and the danger of complacency.

"We are under no illusions. Essendon are a really good lesson for us," Lyon said.

"I think they were 8-2 last year and missed the finals. We can still miss."

"We have a huge challenge next week against North Melbourne. They are a club who has been put under a fair bit of media scrutiny and public heat for a number of reasons that are well documented.

"The last time they were here they were really capable so we understand we have a big challenge," he said.
